Even among men's kaku-obi belts made of pure silk, this authentic Chikuzen obi is popular and recommended.

It is a coarsely textured obi woven in Hakata (formerly Chikuzen) in Kyushu, easy to tie, resists becoming undone, and has just the right amount of friction. The width is stylish, easy to wear, and manageable.

The colors are versatile, using multiple shades that blend well with kimono, making it a practical obi.

Product Details:

  • Material: 100% silk
  • Authentic Chikuzen Hakata-ori, Takumi brand
  • Belt width: approximately 9.5 cm
  • Length: approximately 4 m

The Origin of Hakata Weaving

The origin of Hakata weaving dates back about 700 years, when Yasumitsu Mitsuda of Hakata traveled to Song China, learned techniques such as Chinese weaving and Wu weaving, and brought them back to Japan, passing on the knowledge.

About 360 years after Yasumitsu Mitsuda, Iemon Takewaka is said to have woven obi fabric for the first time and named it 'Hakata Obi.'

In the 5th year of the Keicho era, after Nagamasa Kuroda became the feudal lord, he protected Hakata weaving and granted it privileges. The Kuroda family also presented Hakata weaving to the shogunate every year.

It is said that 'Kenjo Hakata' originated from this. It is light and has an excellent fit when worn.

  • This kaku obi is sold separately.
  • The kimono in the photo is not included.
