  1. Types of Men's Hakama

    • Umanori: A trouser-style (divided) hakama. Convenient for activities with a lot of movement, such as kyudo (Japanese archery) and iaido. When worn over a kimono, either have the kimono tailored to knee length, or, with a full-length kimono (nagagi), hitch the kimono up and secure it with a koshihimo (waist cord) or similar before putting the hakama on.
    • Andon: A skirt-style (undivided) hakama. Convenient for occasions with little movement. It also goes well when worn over a full-length kimono (nagagi).
    • Hirabakama: In the Kyoho era (1716–1736), the tsugi-kamishimo (繋上下), in which the kataginu (sleeveless over-garment) and the hakama were made from separate pieces of cloth, appeared. Later the hakama became independent and the kataginu disappeared. This independent hakama came to be called the hirabakama.
      Later, the position of the gusset (machi) gradually became lower in order to accommodate the long-hemmed kosode.
  2. Choosing by Material

    • Pure silk (shoken): The texture is excellent, but the price is higher. Aftercare is important.
    • Polyester: The price is lower, but the texture is not as good (quality also varies by product). Aftercare is easy.
  3. Price Guide

    Polyester = ¥4,000 (¥4,400 incl. tax / ready-made) to ¥45,000 (¥49,500 incl. tax) / Pure silk = ¥120,000 (¥132,000 incl. tax) to ¥240,000 (¥264,000 incl. tax)
  4. Summer Hakama (Ro)

    Summer-weight hakama. The ro-me (small gaps that let air pass through) run vertically. On striped hakama, the ro-me are placed along the darker stripe lines so that they are less noticeable.
  5. How to Choose Your Size / How to Order

    • How to measure: Measure from the hip bone to the outer ankle bone. Hold the end of the tape measure at the ankle, stand upright, and measure up to the top of the hip bone.
    • Measurements required for made-to-measure orders: waist, hip, and height.
    • Lead time: normally about 3 months / rush order about 1 month.
  6. Hakama by Occasion

    • Coming-of-age ceremony, graduation, weddings: striped hakama
    • Tea ceremony: host = umanori hakama / guest = andon hakama is also fine
    • Competitive karuta: a lightweight tsumugi hakama is well suited.
