小学校の授業でおなじみの「百人一首」。実は今、競技かるたの人口が国内で100万人に達し、増加傾向にあるそうです。
驚くべきは、その熱狂が海を越えていることです。中国の競技者に話を伺うと、なんと現地には日本の約10倍もの競技者がおり、さらに世界最強の国はフランスだと言われているそうです。現在、かるた愛好家は世界約60か国にまで広がっています。
かるたに限らず、茶道、弓道、日本舞踊。
海外でこれほどまでに日本の伝統文化が評価され、深く愛されていることに、私自身も驚きを隠せません。
「伝統」と聞くと少し身構えてしまうかもしれませんが、まずは難しく考えず、気軽に触れて、
そんな日本人がもっと増え、自国の文化にさらなる自信を持つ人が増えるのをればと思います。

The well-known 'Hyakunin Isshu' from elementary school classes is actually seeing a competitive scene that has reached about one million participants in Japan and is on the rise.
What's astonishing is that this enthusiasm has crossed the sea. When speaking with competitors in China, it turns out there are about ten times as many players there as in Japan, and France is said to be the strongest country in the world. Currently, fans of karuta have spread to roughly 60 countries worldwide.
Not just karuta--tea ceremony, archery, Japanese dance. I myself am amazed at how highly Japanese traditional culture is valued and deeply loved overseas.
When we hear the word 'tradition,' we might instinctively feel a bit reserved, but first, without overthinking it, just casually experience it. I hope that this will lead to more Japanese people engaging with their own culture and gaining even greater confidence in it.
Even if not with products from Kyoto Kimono Workshop, why not start light-heartedly with ready-made items or similar, taking your first step from the new year?
