色紙などに歌を書く時、水を描き、文字を葦がなびいたように絵画的に書いたものを葦手<あしで>といいます。のちに歌の意味を絵と文字で組み合わせて表わすようになり、葦手絵・歌絵と呼ぶようになります。色紙、蒔絵、衣服の文様として、持ちいられるようになりました。

When writing poems on colored paper, the technique of painting water and writing characters in a painterly style resembling swaying reeds is called Ashide. Later, this evolved into expressing the poem's meaning through a combination of pictures and text, leading to the terms Ashide-e (reed-hand painting) and Uta-e (poem painting). It came to be used as designs on colored paper, lacquerware, and clothing.
