竹・葦・檜皮などを細かく薄く削って、斜め・縦・横に編んだものを網代といいます。天井・垣・屏風・牛車の屋形、笠、団扇〈うちわ〉などに、広く使用されていますが、着物の文様としても好まれ、染織品の地紋などによく用いられます。
